Soon after, the local businessmen ventured into silk production, they changed the name of the area to Canton, inspired by the Chinese city of the same name which was then a major producer of silk in the world. The silk production in the community ended up failing, but the name of the area stayed as Canton. In the year 1833, it was officially designated as the county seat of Cherokee county.
