Located in Cherokee county, Canton, Georgia, is 16 miles NW of Roswell, Georgia, center to center, and 34 miles N of Atlanta, Georgia. The city is located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Canton has a population of 22,958 residents. The area now known as Canton was originally named Etowah. After the completion of its court house, it was briefly renamed Cherokee. Soon after, the local businessmen ventured into silk production, they changed the name of the area to Canton, inspired by the Chinese city of the same name which was then a major producer of silk in the world. The silk production in the community ended up failing, but the name of the area stayed as Canton. In the year 1833, it was officially designated as the county seat of Cherokee county.
