Preveza is a port town with rich history, built on the Ambracian Gulf, in the vicinity of Ancient Nicopolis. Today the shallow water lagoons enclosed by the Ambracian Gulf contain a protected environment of exceptional ecological interest nesting over 250 rare bird species. Preveza is a picturesque city on the Ionian sea, with exquisite beaches and great cultural interest. In the vicinity are the ruins of the ancient Nicopolis, a city built in the 1st century by the Roman Emperor Octavian August after his triumph at the Aktion naval battle against Marc Antony and Cleopatra. The new museum of Nicopolis is nearby and further away is the Necromanteion of Acheron river, the ancient Kassopi and the famous venetian castle town of Parga. The coastal area around Preveza spreads over 60 kilometers and includes bays, gulfs, peninsulas and pine forests stretching down to sandy beaches.
