There are only a few places in the world where bioluminescence can be seen year round. And luckily for travelers to the Nicoya Peninsula there is one such place here. Bioluminescence is a light created by living organisms through a chemical reaction, biological light. 

In the gulf it is the algae that create this magical effect. Upon being disturbed, the algae give off a burst of light. Since there are millions of them it looks like sparkles in the water. The wavelengths are in the blue to green area and depending on the amount of algae it will appear as bluish or greenish sparkles. 

One of the best ways to see this phenomenon is to get a look from above, and kayaking is a great way to see it well. The algae will stick to your paddle, your hand or floating debris glowing for many seconds if you encounter a strong patch. When you kayak over shallow areas, fish will be scared up and it looks like fireworks under water as they take off, leaving a trail of “fairy dust” in their wake.

With long and perfect waves will give you the chance to practice the techniques of the intermediate level such as # 1 Paddle back out from the breaking waves using the turtle dive to pass waves. #2 Sit on the surfboard with control and manage to turn the board and prepare to catch the waves.#3Lie down with balance on the board and do long, deep paddings to catch the wave before it brakes. #4 Takeoff on the wave make the bottom turn and set up the surfboard on a line to ride the face of the wave.

The pick-up time varies according to the location of each client, that’s is why two days before your transport we will contact you for know about your hotel name and give you the specific time for your shared transportation. On the day of transportation, you must wait for our driver at the reception at least 10 minutes before your arrival, the pick-up time may vary a few minutes so we recommend that you be punctual with the time that we provide you. We rent the kayaks for a day or multiple days for those that would like to great adventure with camping along the way - or sleep in cabins along the coast.

We have 15 years of experience kayaking these waters, and have a huge selection of routes, places to explore and recommendations for where to camp or cabins close to the water. 

The Gulf of Nicoya is an amazing place to kayak. Mostly it is sheltered from the wind, has near-shore islands within an easy paddle, and a varied bird, fish and animal life. The tidal difference is big here which makes for some nice challenges planning the routes.
